Last night’s sale, The Modern and Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Milan registered a record amount of 16 million Euros, adding 5 million to last year’s result. Record prices were announced for Lucio Fontana, but the real stars of the sale have been Alberto Burri and Paolo Scheggi. The latter has registered the record price of the night: Intersuperficie Curva Bianca has been sold for €1,623,000, becoming the most expensive artwork of the artist. Last year, and similar artwork was sold at Christie’s for $1,795,562. Regarding Lucio Fontana, the highest price has been registered for Concetto Spaziale, Attesa (€819,000), a single cut over a magenta surface, that the artist referred to as ‘che bel colorino’.
Alberto Burri has been the other protagonist of the night. Seven artworks have been sold: three cretti with the same provenance have achieved records for this artist. A white cretto and a black cretto dating 1972 have registered €579,000 and €459,000, respectively.
