After a brief Surrealist phase, Jean-Paul Riopelle developed his own characteristic vision, utilising the sculptural possibilities of the impasto technique to construct virtual explosions of colour. A leading exponent of Tachisme, a French version of Art Informel, Riopelle adopted an intimistic approach designed to restore the unformed and indefinite materials of which natural figures are composed.
