MARINELLA SENATORE – SOUTHBANK CENTRE WINTER FESTIVAL

Marinella Senatore will take part in Southbank Centre Winter Festival.  The large-scale light sculptures conceived by Marinella Senatore (Cava de’ Tirreni, Italy, 1977) are handcrafted in Apulia, Italy. They have been designed for public places, museums, and festivals worldwide. These “luminarie” have become a recurring element to Senatore’s production: particularly significant for their catalytic power, these ephemeral architectures create temporary spaces for rituals and socialization. Inspired by Southern Italy’s traditional illuminated decorations, they incorporate key presences, namely the evocative quotes about empowerment and community building.

Senatore places social connections at the basis of her work and focusses her research on activation, stressing the power of art to start a process of individual and collective emancipation.

Since her training at the National Film School in Rome (here she studied direction of photography), the light has always been a key element for the artist: “the light can prove to be a tool for narration and poetic creation, as well as for resistance and cohesion”.

We Rise by Lifting Others – this is the title of the light work that will be showed at Southbank Centre – is imbued with all these subjects and attitudes. It will be a stunning example of the power of light for and to the people.

Opening times: 13 Nov 2023 – 7 Jan 2024, 4pm – 11pm
