Albisola: una stagione d’arte

Following the success of Mazzoleni London and on the occasion of the gallery’s 40th anniversary, Mazzoleni Turin presents the exhibition Albisolauna stagione d’arte unveiled in a newly conceived display. At the heart of the exhibition is a selection of emblematic works by key figures of the Albisola artistic scene — including Enrico Baj, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Roberto Crippa, Lucio Fontana, Wifredo Lam, Piero Manzoni and Emilio Scanavino — offering insight into the vibrant intercultural dialogue that flourished in this unique context.
Accompanying the exhibition is the catalogue published for the London show, featuring a critical essay by Luca Bochicchio, art historian, curator and lecturer at the University of Verona, and founder of MuDA – Museo Diffuso Albisola.

“…everyone seemed to want their place in Albisola, in what Lou Laurin, Swedish artist and wife of Wifredo Lam, ingeniously defined as ‘a veritable Albisolamania”

The Mazzoleni family’s story is deeply entwined with Albisola. Giovanni and Anna Pia first visited in the late 1960s. Their visits became more frequent in the early 1970s, when they developed a close friendship with Wifredo Lam, who had been working in Albisola since the 1950s.

Enrico Baj, 1924 - 2003
Testa solare, 1956
Oil, collage and cotton on canvas
80 x 60 cm - - 31 1/2 x 23 5/8 in

To summarise, in the 1950s and 1960s, Albisola was truly a hub for the most advanced international research in the field of plastic and visual arts, and the exhibition documents and recounts that very moment.
