Loneliness: Rebecca Moccia’s Ministries of Loneliness and Timely Conversations

Published by the Italian Institute of Culture in Seoul in collaboration with Propaganda, the publication “Loneliness: Rebecca Moccia’s Ministries of Loneliness and Timely Conversations”, recounts the work carried out for the Italian Pavilion of the 15th Gwangju Biennale exhibition and forum. The Pavilion, curated by Soik Jung, presented Rebecca Moccia’s research on contemporary loneliness with a body of work that narrates the physical and speculative journey through its Ministries undertaken by the artist across Italy, South Korea, the UK, the USA, and Japan, focusing on its materiality. This includes the words we use to describe this emotional state, the architecture and sound of the solitary spaces we inhabit, the relationship between bodies and the social structures that shape loneliness, and the connections with the capitalist economic system in which this emotion has developed historically.

The book includes a report on the artist’s filming and research workshop with students at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, held in preparation for the exhibition. It also features installation views and an overview of the show at the Dong-guk Museum of Art in Gwangju.
It also explores the forum organised as part of the pavilion’s public programme, featuring social science and practical discussions with academic and other experts on the origins and manifestations of loneliness in South Korea.
