Gianfranco Zappettini – Museo del Novecento, Milan

Gianfranco Zappettini’s 1976 work Tele sovrapposte n. 30/D enters the collections of the Museo del Novecento in Milan. It belongs to the Tele sovrapposte cycle, a body of work through which the artist sought to redefine the boundaries of painting, focusing on process, materiality, and the autonomy of the artwork.
The piece was exhibited at documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 — a recognition that testifies to Zappettini’s central role in shaping Analytical Painting at a European level during the 1970s.

Says Gianfranco Zappettini, describing the work:

I trace a mark, another, and then another again, veiling it then with systematic superimposition of sheets of tracing paper or [canvas], as far as perceptible limits. The reference for these lines is white. By adding gestures to it I subtract the image, more comes from less, cancellation from stratification.
